Smithville Lake
(5/1/2008)
Lake Elevation at Normal Poo3: 864.2 Temperature: 52
Inflow: 175 cfs Outflow: 8 cfs Level: 0.82 feet high
Report by Burton's Bait and Tackle
CRAPPIE: Poor to Fair: The crappie have moved from the deep structure and are scattered all over the lake. They have started moving toward the coves for the spawn. It will probably be a few weeks yet before they are congregated back up and easier to catch. Still some sporadic success at the docks.
BASS: There are starting to be flashes of good bass fishing. The first Thurs. evening tourn. was a rain fest but the fish seemed to be biting. 21 fish were caught in just a short 3 hour period. Spinner baits, jigs, brush hogs, tubes, and jerk baits accounted for most of the fish. Sounds like a pattern huh! Hit a fish in the head and he will bite. Some places on the main lake seem to be clearing up but there is still lots of color in the water.
CATFISH: Starting to bite good in the rivers. Shad sides and guts are the favorites.
WHITE BASS: The whites are up in the river areas of the lake. The best fishing is above the free ramp. Fish the areas of the little Platte arm between the C-hwy bridge to the free ramp.
WALLEYE: The walleye have been on the dam for a week or two but the catching is kind of slow. Should be over soon.

Fishing Report from Sterett Creek Marina 4/23/08
This is one of those fishing reports that are hard to write. We know what is going to happen in the next couple of days but it just hasn't started yet. With the weather we have now and the water temp in the coves reaching 60 deg. it's just a matter of time. The mushrooms are out in full force and the turkeys are really gobbling. We are starting to see a few crappie come in off the lake but I would say that that number should pick up every day. The lake is clearing up nicely so come and enjoy the great spring weather.
LAKE LEVEL: 718.77
WATER TEMP: 53 deg at the dam. Coves are much warmer
WATER CLARITY: STAINED.
BASS: Last nights Hawg Fights weren't really what I expected. With the weather and the water conditions I looked for 15 lbs. but I guess the fish weren't thinking like I was. Tom Novinska and Chuck Strohman took first place with 5.46 lbs and big bass with 3.07 lbs. Jack and Rob Hockett came in second with 1.96 lbs. The winning stringer came off secondary points towards the back end of a cove. The water temp was 63 deg. The fish came out of 8' of water on spinner baits and jigs. I really think if we would of stayed in that area we could have caught more fish. Look for transition points going from chunk rock to clay. Look for shad working the surface.
CRAPPIE: We are seeing a few fish starting to come in off the lake and as I said earlier I think it will improve by the day. Saturday Jeff Raskie and Kerry King brought in 10 fish weighing 10.10 lbs with a big fish weighing 1.7 lbs. They said they caught their fish out of 25' of water 14' deep. They were fishing the deep water trees in the dam area. I think one thing to remember this year on spawning crappie is that with the lake being 13' high they will spawn in deeper water. I would look for spawners in 6' to 8' of water.
WHITES & HYBRIDS: No Report.
CATFISH: Jugs are still working in our area. And you guessed it little smokies are sill the best bait. The fish are holding on the flats in 15' of water with the bait set about 8'. Deep water needs to be close by.
That's it for this week from Sterett Creek Marina
Table Rock

The entire White River Chain is at or almost at flood pool. This morning around 2:00 a.m., they open the ten flood gates at Table Rock Lake again. Most of the folks who were affected by the first opening were just getting back into their homes and getting things cleaned up. Unfortunately, they may be faced with more of the same. Stan spent all day yesterday helping one of our friends move his belongings in anticipation of the gates opening again. Glad they did it!
We had some trips scheduled today but cancelled them. We are always concerned when the water first starts up due to debris and other unknowns.
Good news - The Dogwoods are in bloom and it is the prettiest I have seen them in a long time. Obviously they have had lots of moisture. AND, when the gates are turned off again, fishing will be very good. Right after the gates were turned off last time, we had boats on the water and fishing was very good. Most of the fish we caught were "beefed up" probably from fighting the heavy water.
